Charlie had a GREAT time at the SOC show on March
28t, 1999, introducing the Six Teens (featuring Trudy Williams) and the
Elgins. What a fantastic show it was. Trudy was a sweet and lovely woman
and wonderful in her vocals as we all remembered her from songs like A
Casual Look and Only Jim. And the Elgins were right on target with
exceptional versions of their classics Uncle Sam"s Man, Extra, Extra, and
(as the Bagdads) Bring Back Those Doo-Wops! It is a show C.A. was thrilled
to have emceed and one that folks were there will remember for a long,
long time.
U nder-appreciated artists: THE LAMPLIGHTERS (a.k.a. The Sharps) How is it possible they can be overlooked? So many artists throughout the history of rock and roll, rhythm and blues, etc. have come and gone, doing spectacular work, but never receiving the recognition they deserve. Sometimes they had moderate hits on the Rhythm and Blues Charts or even a song or two that ranked in the Billboard Top 100 and then were forgotten. Other times, an artist was not even valued in his/her own time with the respect they deserved, never charting, receiving little or no air play, even though they put out some classy stuff. One such group is The Lamplighters, a group that never had a hit on any charts and yet, a group that spawned many groups or soloists (some successful, some not...) like the Sharps who recorded any number of good songs like Gig-A-Lene and Thurston Harris who recorded Little Bitty Pretty One and the Rivingtons of Papa Oom Mow Mow fame. But as The Lamplighters they were something special, socking out a special brand of raucous rhythm and blues vocal group harmony that utilized catchy phrases, double entendre, etc. Now, through the magic of C.D.'s, many of their songs are available. Two "imports" The Lamplighters/Be Bop Wino and The Lamplighters/Bo Peep are available at The Attic, Grant Avenue, Millvale (1-412-821-8484).What great CDs they are: Out of Regency Records, Laurel-Ontario, Canada, these are flawlessly remastered and contain gems like Be-Bop Wino, I Used to Cry Mercy, Mercy (a particular favorite of the Shag crowd), Ride, Jockey, Ride, Roll On, Gig-a-Lene, Have Love, Will Travel (featuring Duane Eddy on the guitar), and Lock My Heart {and throw the key away}....plus many, many more. When it comes to their Rivingtons' stuff, EMI Capitol had a fantastic C.D. out (it may, however, be out of print) featuring Papa Oom Mow Mow, Mama Oom Mow Mow, and their spectacular version of Cherry....with the soaring tenor/falsetto. If this C.D. is not currently available, we here at Apple Sauce certainly hope and urge Collectables out in Narberth, PA, to get the rights to secure the distribution rights to it {if they have not already done so} and release it....IT IS A GEM! (Perhaps, as of this writing, they have already done so...check the Attic about its availability...){Collectables is the BEST when it comes to re-issuing those EMI C.D.'s that EMI pulled off the market much too soon!} Anyway...among these three C.D.'s, a fairly intensive catalog of this highly under-appreciated group CAN indeed become appreciated in YOUR collection. Take A Listen! After you hear their sounds from the Federal days, you'll scratch your head and wonder why they NEVER scored an R&B chart hit nor sent reverberations down the hallways of R n R history! Lots of Good Stuff by Big Jay McNeely on C.D. Collectables #5133: A complete collection of Big Jay's stuff on Swingin' Label. Incredible stuff like There Is Something On Your Mind with Little Sonny doing the vocals; (this is the uncut version) Psycho Serenade with the overdubs from the 45 RPM master; Plus Back...Shack... Track, the previously unreleased Swingin' version of Flying Home, and lots more. From Czechoslovakia comes the Big Jay McNeely Road House Boogie C.D. with Big Jay, Hoppin' with Hunter, Jay's Frantic, & Real Crazy Cool among others. (contains great liner notes by Bill Millar!) Nervous and Crazy: two C.D. imports from Saxophile Records, Ltd. (#103 and #105) with Nervous Man Nervous, Big Jay Shuffle, 3-D, Nervous Man Nervous without the overdub, Deacon Blows for Ray, Mule Milk etc., etc., etc. Oh, man, what an array of tunes. H ey, y'all...it's getting toward Spring and Summer: weddings, pool parties, reunions, graduation parties, and the Works. Don't forget: Old C.A. has a complete library of new sounds, old sounds, disco, pop, rap, country, etc. to make ANY PARTY.... EXTRA SPECIAL! He's YOUR DJ with the greatest sound and top-flight digital equipment, too. Call (1-412-734-1146) or email him for availability or free brochure. "Have Music, Will Boogie!"...go to next column... |
Just to show how kind Bo Diddley is...Old C.A. was
being a typical Uncle and Dad wanting to get a photo of his kid & nephew
with Bo Diddley. So, he & the kids waited right outside the gate near the
stage entrance for Bo to arrive.... (Poor Henry DeLuca...he was trying to
get the show moving on time and C.A. was there with his little
camera...trying for that shot!) Bo stepped out of the car & graciously
posed for the photo and then, with poor Henry motioning for Bo to get up
on the stage...C.A. says, "Could I get another one just to be sure?" and
Bo, who had a show to do, held up his hand and said, "Go ahead...take your
time...." Thanks from C.A. to Henry & Bo for being great!! One of the truly great Bass voices of all rhythm and blues history has joined the great vocal group in Soul Heaven: Gerald Gregory, the wildly exciting bass man for The Spaniels, died several days before Valentine's Day, 1999. Gerald had appeared many times in the Pittsburgh area during this decade when The Spaniels performed for SOC or PORCC. What a thrill it was when Pookie would bring Gerald with him, for Gerald's bass voice had the unique ability to bounce along with characteristic rock and roll splash (like his version of Zing Went the Strings of My Heart) and an instant later to become a plaintive and mellow blend (in songs like So Deep Within.). In addition, Gerald was a genuinely kind person .... everyone who talked with him or met him was impressed by his relaxed, friendly candor: he was so appreciative of the enthusiastic reception The Spaniels always received when they came to the 'Burgh. His last appearance in Pittsburgh was for a SOC show several months ago. He was ill even then, but went on stage any way and gave the performance of his life. More New Angels in Soul Heaven: Sonny Knight, famous for his hit Confidential in 1956, died in September in Hawaii. Charlie Foxx (of Charlie and Inez Foxx) who wrote and recorded Mockingbird in 1963 died In Mobile, Alabama, in September. Rocky Turner, the second tenor for The Lamplighters, The Sharps, and The Rivingtons, died in August in Las Vegas. He also sang on Thurston Harris's immortal Little Bitty Pretty One. (For more about the Lamplighters, Sharps, Rivingtons, see other articles on this web site) Sadly so many have passed on to Rock And Roll Soul Heaven where they now sing with the angels! Just as this issue of Apple Sauce was going to press, a late-breaking news story caught fire: Dick Muse, the man who founded the Laurels, has just been signed on as a member of the Legendary Skyliners. He'll have his 1st gig with them on March 26: Congratulations, Dick! Fantastic Comebacks by Fantastic Groups from Early Pittsburgh Rock & Roll Here in the Metro-Pittsburgh area, we were blessed in the early days of rock and roll (and indeed even before that in pop, jazz, big band, etc.) to be home to great talents and innovators (Metro-Pittsburgh's Porky Chedwick is truly one of the great innovators in the history of radio). This past several years have allowed us to witness the resurgence of reunions among the various vocal groups that made history in the early days and are continuing to make history today. The Laurels: Dick Muse and his gang continue to put out CD's and recapture the fantastic sound that they originated so many years ago. The Laurels' new CD ( The Laurels/An R & B Odyssey) continues that tradition with powerful renditions of Over the Rainbow and Don't Just Stand There (1995 version). The CD is a MUST HAVE! The El Capris: The May 31, 1994, edition of The Apple Corps Newsletter told of the reunion of the El Capris, truly one of the greatest R n B groups of the 50's; who can forget their comeback concert at Donna's Carousel Lounge way back on May 14, 1994. And they are still doing it in 2000. The Four Dots : Marvin Brown and his wonderful array of talented vocalists made their smash re-debut at the SOC Show with Harvey and the Magnificents. The Four Dots not only proved that tight harmony still sounds better than anything out there today, but also exemplified to the world that Rhythm and Blues is not simply something for teenagers, but is truly an art form that transcends age and economics: an art form for all men and women in all times and places. The El Venos: at a recent PORCC Show and at a recent SOC Show, the audiences were set to rockin' and marveling by the reformation of the El Venos! Leon Daniels has once again proved that his spectacular achievement of being the leader of the first teen group from Pittsburgh to land a national recording contract with a major label in the rock era was NO FLUKE! Leon is not only talented himself, but has put together an array of singers and musicians that combine talent, showmanship, and pizzazz to the highest order. The El Venos wowed SOC and PORCC audiences and no doubt will be wowing LOTS of audiences in the near future.
